FAQ

  • How and when to register for a foreign language course?

Registrations for foreign language courses for full-time programmes are available at ul.amu.edu.pl. Each semester, before the beginning of classes, the student must register for a foreign language course using the assigned token (the first token is assigned on the basis of the placement test results; future tokens will be assigned on the basis of the previous foreign language course levels). All information, including the dates of registrations are shared with each Faculty’s Student Office, and can be found on the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre website (the registrations open no later than 7 days before the beginning of the course).

For full-time Bachelor and long-cycle Master programmes foreign language courses begin in the second semester of year 1 (unless stipulated otherwise in the specific study programme).

For full-time Master programmes foreign language courses begin in the first semester of year 1 (unless stipulated otherwise in the specific study programme).

  • What is the number of credit hours for foreign language courses for full-time programmes?

For full-time programmes the number of credit hours for obligatory foreign language courses is as follows:

120h for Bachelor programmes: 4 semesters – 30h per semester (general language course),

180h for long-cycle Master programmes: 6 semesters – 30h per semester (120h of general language course + 60h of foreign language for special purposes course),

60h for Master programmes: 2 semesters – 30h per semester (foreign language for special purposes course) (unless stipulated otherwise in the specific study programme).

  • Registration token – what is it? How and when to use it?

    Full-time Bachelor programmes:

The student receives the registration token in USOS after taking the placement test (available at the end of year 1 winter semester). The token is assigned to the appropriate proficiency level assessed by the placement test (A2, B1, B2.1, B2.2). The token enables the student to register for the obligatory foreign language course available at ul.amu.edu.pl. The tokens are assigned each semester, and each semester the student must register for the foreign language course.

For students of full-time Bachelor and long-cycle Master programmes, the foreign language course begins in the second semester of year 1 (unless stipulated otherwise in the specific study programme). The foreign language course begins at level A2 or higher.

The languages available are as follows: English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, and Italian. However, the language offer for specific programmes and Faculties may differ.

    Full-time Master programmes:

First-year students of full-time Master programmes receive the registration token in USOS in the first semester. The token enables registration for the obligatory foreign language for special purposes course LEK-SPEC-B2 offered by specific Faculty. The foreign language for special purposes course is a continuation of the foreign language course at the Bachelor programme – B2+ level. The registration is available at ul.amu.edu.pl.

For full-time Master programmes, the foreign language course begins in the first semester (unless stipulated otherwise in the specific study programme).

  • What is the difference between a diagnostic test and a placement test?

All students of full-time Bachelor and long-cycle Master programmes must take a diagnostic test at the beginning of the first semester, and a placement test at the end of the first semester. Both tests are available at testyjezykowe.amu.edu.pl. All information regarding the tests, including their dates are available at the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre website: sj.amu.edu.pl, as well as shared with Student Offices.

The diagnostic test aims at informing the student about their proficiency in the language. As foreign language courses begin at level A2 or higher, if the student fails to pass the test at level A2 or higher, the student is entitled to language consultations with one of the available language instructors regarding individual learning process, and to free e-learning materials for self-study of English (temporarily, that is to 30.09.2022, available at http://elearning.amu.edu.pl) – AMU email login credentials; go to AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre=> e-English: materials for self-study for A1-A2 level.

The placement test aims at assigning the students to the language groups with an appropriate proficiency level (A2, B1, B2.1, B2.2). Students are assigned to the appropriate language group once before the foreign language course begins. Students who do not take the placement test cannot register for the foreign language course.

    - Students who begin the foreign language course at A2 level must participate in the course for four semesters, beginning with the second semester of year 1 (120h in total); four registration tokens are used in total,

    - Students who begin the foreign language course at B1 level must participate in the course for three semesters, beginning with the second semester of year 1 (90h in total); three registration tokens are used in total,

    - Students who begin the foreign language course at B2.1 level must participate in the course for two semesters, beginning with the second semester of year 1 (60h in total); two registration tokens are used in total,

    - Students who begin the foreign language course at B2.2 level must participate in the course for one semester, beginning with the second semester of year 1 (30h in total); one registration token is used.

Students who provide an external language proficiency certificate listed in Appendix 1 to the Ordinance 135/2021/2022 of the Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań of 15 July 2021 on the organization of foreign language teaching available at the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre websitesj.amu.edu.pl (go to: Terms and conditions of completing foreign language courses) – are exempt from diagnostic and placement tests.

  • Should I take the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam at B2 level? If so, when?

Students of full-time programmes are obligated to take the proficiency exam following the foreign language course. The AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre offers proficiency exams at the end of each semester. The dates of the exams are available at the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre website: sj.amu.edu.pl, and shared with the Student Offices of specific Faculties in the beginning of each academic year. A foreign language course at B2.2 level must be completed in order to take the proficiency exam.

The proficiency exam should be taken no later than in the fifth semester (unless the specific study programme permits taking the exam in later semesters).

Before taking the proficiency exam, the student must register for the exam at the date provided by the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre at sj.amu.edu.pl. The registration dates will also be available in the Student Offices of specific Faculties.

Students who do not pass the proficiency exam at B2 level are entitled to a retake.

  • Which documents exempt me from the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam at B2 level?

Students who provide an external language proficiency certificate are exempt from the foreign language course and the following language proficiency exam pursuant Appendix 1 to the Ordinance 135/2021/2022 of the Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań of 15 July 2021 on the organization of foreign language teaching available at the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre websitesj.amu.edu.pl (go to: Terms and conditions of completing foreign language courses). A copy of an external language proficiency certificate for B2 level must be provided to the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre along with an application for exemption from a foreign language course (the original certificate should be available on request).

  • What are surplus tokens?

Students who begin the foreign language course at a level higher than A2, finish the course and pass the proficiency exam before the final semester without using all four registration tokens for the obligatory foreign language course at A2, B1, B2.1, B2.2 levels obtain surplus tokens.

For example, if the student has already passed the language proficiency exam after 30h of foreign language course, and has 3 remaining tokens (for 90h of foreign language course), the student may: continue the course at a higher language proficiency level, begin a foreign language course for another language, or begin a foreign language for special purposes course. The information about the available courses for students with surplus tokens is available at the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre website in the beginning of each semester.

If the student is exempt from the obligatory foreign language course due to an external certification of language proficiency at B2 level, the student may use the surplus tokens and register for other courses (120h).

  • Can I learn a second foreign language from the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre offer

Students who do not use all four registration tokens for a foreign language course (A2, B1, B2.1, B2.2 level) may use the remaining tokens to register for another foreign language course at the AMU Foreign Languages Teaching Centre.
