About COIL
What is COIL?
Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an innovative teaching and learning approach that connects students and faculty from universities in different countries through structured online collaboration.
Within a COIL module, students work in international teams on shared assignments that are embedded into their regular courses. These projects are co-designed and co-facilitated by instructors from partner institutions, ensuring academic alignment and meaningful integration into the curriculum.
COIL goes beyond virtual exchange because it is:
- Course-integrated
- Faculty-led and collaboratively designed
- Structured around shared learning outcomes
- Focused on both disciplinary knowledge and intercultural learning
Through guided collaboration, reflection, and problem-solving, students develop subject expertise while engaging with diverse perspectives and global contexts.
Participants build:
- Disciplinary knowledge through applied, international tasks
- Intercultural competence and global awareness
- Digital collaboration and communication skills
- The ability to work effectively across cultural and geographic boundaries
Why COIL?
COIL creates accessible, equitable global learning opportunities without requiring physical mobility.
Equitable Global Learning
