FAQs
- How long is a COIL module?
Most course-integrated COIL modules run between 6 and 8 weeks, allowing time for relationship-building, collaboration, and reflection.
Shorter formats (2–4 weeks) are possible in the case of voluntary COIL sprints or intensive projects.
- How much time will it require each week?
Workload depends on the course design, but typically students spend 1–3 hours per week on international collaboration activities in addition to regular coursework.
Clear timelines and milestones are provided at the start of the module.
- Do I need advanced language skills?
COIL projects at Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) are designed to be inclusive and supportive, with the working language and required proficiency level aligned with the theme and academic focus of the course. English is the most common working language, though collaborations may also take place in Spanish, Italian, or Russian depending on the course profile. Expectations regarding language use are clearly defined in advance. Importantly, communication in AMU COILs prioritises collaboration, clarity, and intercultural exchange rather than linguistic perfection, with language treated primarily as a tool for effective teamwork and mutual understanding.
- What platforms are used?
Projects use widely accessible digital tools, such as:
- University Learning Management Systems (LMS) (e.g. Moodle)
- Video conferencing platforms (e.g. MS Teams)
- Shared document and presentation tools
- Online collaboration platforms (e.g. Padlet)
Tools are selected to ensure accessibility for all participants.
- Will I be graded?
In most course-integrated COIL modules, participation and outputs are assessed as part of the course requirements.
For voluntary projects, recognition may include a certificate or formal confirmation of participation rather than a grade.
- What if my team members are in different time zones?
Working across time zones is part of the global learning experience.
Projects are designed to combine synchronous meetings (when possible) with asynchronous collaboration, so teams can work flexibly despite scheduling differences.
- Can first-year students participate?
Yes. First-year students can participate in both course-integrated modules and selected voluntary projects.
Activities are scaffolded and supported to match students’ experience levels.
- What happens if there is a conflict within the team?
Intercultural teamwork can sometimes bring misunderstandings.
You will receive guidance on communication strategies and conflict resolution. Instructors monitor the process and can provide support when needed.
- Will I receive a certificate?
Recognition is defined by the coordinating faculty. This may include:
- Course-based assessment
- A certificate confirming participation
- Formal acknowledgment of international collaboration experience
- Why should I join a COIL project?
COIL allows you to gain meaningful international experience without leaving your home university. It strengthens your CV, builds intercultural competence, enhances your communication and teamwork skills, and connects you with peers around the world –competencies highly valued by employers and graduate programmes. It also serves as excellent preparation for future physical mobilities, such as Erasmus+ exchanges or international internships.
