COIL at AMU

Coil 11

Since 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) has systematically developed Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiatives across faculties and with international partners.

In October 2024, the AMU COIL HUB was formally established to coordinate, support, and further develop COIL activities across the university. The HUB provides organisational support, facilitates partner matching, and offers training opportunities.

Between 2019 and 2025, AMU collaborated with over 40 partner universities in 20 countries across 5 continents (Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and Asia).

AMU Projects:

  • Poland-Belgium-Hungary-USA

    AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre

Theme: Developing business communication skills within an online collaborative project

    Mathilde Callari; EPHEC, Belgium

    Rita Koris, PhD; PPCU, Hungary

Zsuzsanna Palmer, PhD; Grand Valley State University, USA

    Project overview:

This practical project supported students in developing key employability skills for the international job market through a structured recruitment simulation. Participants recorded a video self-introduction, created a digital CV aligned with international standards, and prepared for job interviews while receiving constructive feedback from teachers and peers at each stage. The project culminated in simulated interviews conducted by recruiters from all four partner countries, offering authentic insight into diverse recruitment practices and strengthening students’ professional communication, self-presentation, and intercultural readiness.

    Project overview:

This COIL project brought together medical students in Ukraine and students from the Faculty of Biology in Poland to explore current topics in human biology and health through collaborative academic inquiry. Working in interdisciplinary and international teams, participants analysed recent peer-reviewed research papers, critically evaluated methodologies and findings, and reflected on how global scientific advances relate to healthcare realities in their respective local contexts. By integrating local perspectives with international research trends, students developed the ability to apply global knowledge to region-specific challenges. The project culminated in joint presentations, strengthening research literacy, interdisciplinary communication, and the capacity to translate complex scientific insights for diverse academic and professional audiences.

  • Poland-Finland

    AMU Foreign Language Teaching Centre

Theme: Combining expertise from linguistics and tourism: a tale of two cities

    Instructors:

    Katarzyna Radke; AMU, Poland

Judit Hahn, PhD; University of Jyväskylä, Finland

    Project overview:

During this 6-week COIL collaboration, foreign language students from Finland partnered with students of information technology and tourism management from Poland. Working in international teams, participants combined linguistic expertise with digital and tourism-promotion skills to analyse the official municipal websites of their sister cities – Jyväskylä and Poznań. Using collaborative online tools, they critically evaluated online communication strategies and jointly produced promotional videos highlighting lesser-known aspects of both cities, integrating intercultural insight with practical digital competencies.

    Instructors:

    Anna Kwaśniewska; AMU, Poland

Boniswa Mafunda, PhD; Durban University of Technology, South Africa

    Project overview:

In this COIL project, IT students from Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU), the Nadnotecki Institute in Piła, and Durban University of Technology (DUT) collaborated in international teams to design practical solutions to global challenges visible in their local contexts. Drawing explicitly on their engineering and technical expertise, students applied problem-solving approaches, digital tools, and systems thinking to address a selected Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Each team developed a persuasive pitch demonstrating how individuals – acting as global citizens – can contribute to its achievement. The project connected global frameworks with local realities while fostering intercultural competence, interdisciplinary teamwork, and socially responsible technological innovation.
