Description of the Proficiency Exam

Upon completing the foreign language course required by their degree program, full-time first-cycle (Bachelor's) and long-cycle (Master's) students are required to pass a final proficiency examination in a modern language. These exams are organized by the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Center (SJ UAM) during the winter and summer exam sessions.

Eligibility for the proficiency exam is granted upon the successful completion of a B2.2 level language course.

Changing the Language of the Examination

Students attending a B2.2 course in one language who wish to take the proficiency exam in a different language must:

  1. Obtain consent from the Dean of their faculty.
  2. Report the change to the the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Center office by the end of October (for the winter session) or the end of March (for the summer session).

A change of language is only permitted before the first attempt at the exam. It is not possible to change the language for a retake. The final decision regarding eligibility for students changing their language rests with the Foreign Language Teaching Center.

Exemptions: Only external language certificates specified in the official appendix exempt a student from the proficiency exam.

Exam Structure and Adjustments

The exam consists of an oral part and a written part. The exam format for both parts is identical for every language.

Students with Disabilities

Students seeking Reasonable Adjustments (RA) must:

  • Contact the AMU Student Support Center (Biuro Wsparcia Osób z Niepełnosprawnościami).
  • Submit the Center’s opinion to the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Center office at least 2 weeks before the scheduled exam date (pursuant to Rector's Resolution No. 135 2020/2021).
  • For retakes, the opinion must be resubmitted each time at least 2 weeks before the exam.
  • Important: Students with granted RAs do not register themselves via USOS. Registration is handled by the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Center office staff upon receipt of the adjustment request.

Before the Exam

  • Oral Part: Always takes place before the written part.
  • Registration: Registration for the English oral exam and written exams for all languages is done via the USOS token registration system during periods specified by the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Center.
  • Commitment: Registering for the oral exam constitutes a commitment to attend. An unjustified absence will result in 0 points for the oral component.
  • Schedule: Information regarding registration dates is published on sj.amu.edu.pl and sent to the Student Service Offices (BOS) at each faculty.
  • Location: Details regarding the building and room number are provided upon registration.

During the Exam

  • Arrival: For the written exam, arrive at least 30 minutes early with a valid photo ID.
  • Late Arrivals: Examiners reserve the right to refuse entry to students who arrive late.
  • Failure to Register: Students who do not register within the designated timeframe will not be allowed to take the exam.
  • Mobile Devices: The use of mobile phones and other electronic devices is strictly prohibited. Violation of this rule may result in immediate disqualification and removal from the room.
  • Materials: No aids (dictionaries, textbooks, etc.) are allowed.
  • Answer Sheets: Students must transfer all answers to the answer sheet within the allotted time. Only the answer sheet is subject to grading.

After the Exam

The final result is the sum of the points from both the oral and written parts. The minimum passing score is 60%.

Retakes

If a student fails the exam (scores below 60% overall), they must retake it.

  • Students may retake both the oral and written parts.
  • If the oral part is retaken, only the most recent result counts.
  • If a student chooses not to retake the oral part, the score from the previous attempt is carried over.

  • Warning: An unjustified absence from a retake oral exam results in 0 points, which will be recorded as the final score for that component, regardless of previous points.

Certificates

Upon request, the AMU Foreign Language Teaching Center issues a Certificate of Language Proficiency based on the passed exam. A fee is required for the certificate, as regulated by the AMU Rector's Resolution No. 325/2013/2014.
